She-Devil at Innenkreis gives the witch and the difficult woman the floor

She-Devil is a group exhibition at Innenkreis in Copenhagen. It brings together eight women artists around the figure of the “bad woman”: the temptress, the witch, the difficult and the hysterical. Their works are woven, brewed, fired, cast and burned, and the show runs from 30 October 2026 to 9 January 2027.

The gallery describes the She-Devil as a figure both feared and desired. She is a product of patriarchal imagination, yet she also carries rebellion. She sits between autonomy and oppression, disobedience and submission. In other words, the exhibition takes these labels and lets the artists rework them on their own terms.

She-Devil and the politics of camp

Its starting point is Susan Sontag’s “Notes on ‘Camp'” (1964). Here, theatricality and exaggeration act as forms of resistance. As a result, the She-Devil becomes a maximalist icon: too seductive, too dangerous, too much. By leaning into artifice, the grotesque and excess, the show mocks the old stories used to control women. At the same time, it claims them back. Its subject, in the end, is agency: the choice to rebel or keep house, to seduce or disrupt, to conform or defy.

Eight artists, eight materials

Each artist answers in a different material. For example, Maral Taskirici paints Eve in lilac glaze on white tiles set into a cross of dark wood. Eve reaches among fruiting branches while birds circle her. In Marie Holst’s woven textiles, a hand flowers into tendrils tipped with dark beads. Elsewhere, a pale serpentine body unfurls beneath a small moon. Sara Samsøe Moghaddas models three ceramic heads with half-lowered eyes and small red mouths.

Maria Koshenkova’s glass hangs as if still molten, shaped by heat, gravity and pressure. Meanwhile, Charlotte Moreno Kølkjær shows a vessel and a wall piece in ceramic. They track how desire, value and time settle into surfaces. Anne Skaarup Jaedicke carves wood with fire, and Sian Kristoffersen’s bronze relief holds interlocking rings in each other’s clasp.

Embodied Alchemy

Anne Søgaard Frandsen’s Embodied Alchemy stretches kombucha pellicle across stainless steel frames like a veil. One skin is steeped in red wine. The other keeps the pale honey colour of the brew. Both are finished with coconut oil and beeswax. Each panel measures 33 by 20.8 by 2 cm. The gallery links the material to brewing knowledge kept by women for millennia.
