Gasworks was founded in 1994 by the philanthropist and collector Robert Loder. It occupies a 19th-century warehouse just behind the Oval cricket ground, a building it now owns as a registered charity.
The organisation commissions exhibitions by emerging and underrepresented artists, runs residencies and studios, and develops participation projects with local children, young people and families. It is the London hub of Triangle Network and part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio.

Studios and residencies
Nine subsidised studios are let to London-based artists on five-year leases, and four more serve the international residency programme, which runs for three months. In 2020 Gasworks bought an additional house for residency artists. Since 1994 it has supported more than 750 artists from over 100 countries.
Ibrahim Mahama, Sin Wai Kin, Tania Bruguera, Sonia Boyce, Subodh Gupta, Lisa Brice and Joy Gregory have all passed through. “It brought me to London, and I am still here 26 years later!” Brice told The Art Newspaper in 2024.

Exhibitions
Robert Leckie, formerly curator and head of programmes, became director after Alessio Antoniolli stepped down following 18 years. Paloma Contreras Lomas’s Disco Inferno is on view until 13 December 2026, followed by Thuy Tien Nguyen’s Press, Release from 14 January 2027.
