Matt’s Gallery

Start

Matt’s Gallery has long approached the exhibition not simply as a place to display finished objects, but as a situation in which an artist can test an idea. Its history is closely associated with ambitious installations, moving-image work and projects that change the viewer’s relationship to space.

Founded by Robin Klassnik in 1979, the gallery has developed a distinctive model of working closely with artists on the production and presentation of new work. Its programme has included Susan Hiller, Richard Wilson, Willie Doherty and Mike Nelson, whose practices frequently extend beyond conventional exhibition formats.

Now based in Nine Elms, the gallery continues to foreground experimentation. Recent and current programmes include work by Imogen Stidworthy and Annie Whiles, while its archive reveals decades of projects that have moved between sculpture, performance, film and conceptual enquiry.

The gallery’s changing locations across London also form part of its story. Rather than defining itself through one architectural setting, Matt’s Gallery has maintained a consistent commitment to the possibilities of artist-led production. The space becomes a framework for each project, not an immutable backdrop.

For visitors, this approach offers an encounter with art in the process of becoming: a work might occupy the entire room, unfold through time or require the audience to reconsider how an exhibition can be experienced.
