Flowers Gallery Kingsland Road occupies a 19th-century warehouse at 82 Kingsland Road in Shoreditch. The gallery moved here from Hackney in 2002, taking 12,000 square feet spread over three floors.

Flowers was established in London in 1970 by Angela Flowers (1932–2023), who opened her first gallery on Lisle Street on 10 February that year, above the Artists International Association. The gallery is now directed by her son, Matthew Flowers, with spaces in London and Hong Kong and a team in New York.

From Hackney to Shoreditch

The gallery’s East End history began in 1988, when it opened Flowers East on Richmond Road, off Mare Street in Hackney. The 4,500 square foot industrial building had previously been a furrier and a private laundry, and at the time it was the largest commercial gallery space in London. In 1991 the gallery expanded into an 18,000 square foot former leather factory across the road, where it staged large exhibitions including British Abstract Art, co-curated with Bryan Robertson.

The move to Kingsland Road followed in 2002, two years after the gallery opened on Cork Street in Mayfair. The early 2000s brought the Scottish painter Ken Currie to the gallery and a growing photography programme, with artists including Edward Burtynsky, Robert Polidori, Mona Kuhn, Nadav Kander, Julie Cockburn and Shen Wei. In 2020, its 50th anniversary year, Flowers marked the occasion with the exhibitions 50 x 50 and 50 Years across its two London galleries.

Tower Blocks

In 2025 the Kingsland Road space presented Tower Blocks, a survey marking David Hepher’s 90th birthday. Born in 1935, Hepher has painted the urban landscape of south London for more than six decades, drawn to the scale and grid-like structure of the social housing estates built there in the 1960s and 1970s. He regards himself as a landscape painter, in his words one who paints “what is around me.”
