White Cube

by

Jay Jopling founded White Cube in 1993 in a small room on Duke Street, St James’s. There, each artist could show only once. The gallery gave first one-person shows to many of the Young British Artists, Tracey Emin and Gavin Turk among them.

A second space on Hoxton Square in East London followed in 2000 and closed at the end of 2012. Outside London the gallery now has addresses in Hong Kong, Paris, Seoul and New York.

Bermondsey

White Cube Bermondsey opened in October 2011 in a 1970s warehouse on Bermondsey Street, renovated by Casper Mueller Kneer. With more than 5,440 square metres of interior space, it is described by the gallery as Europe’s largest commercial gallery. A large open courtyard fronts the building, which holds three main exhibition spaces, among them the 778-square-metre South Gallery II and 9x9x9, a double-height room lit from above, along with an auditorium and a bookshop.

Gabriel Orozco’s Chronotopic, curated by Briony Fer, is on view until 8 November 2026. A solo exhibition of recent paintings by Anselm Kiefer opens on 25 November.

Mason’s Yard

Mason’s Yard opened in 2006, near the original Duke Street room. Designed by MRJ Rundell & Associates on the site of an electricity sub-station, it was the first free-standing building in St James’s in more than 30 years. A street-level gallery sits above a double-height basement gallery with natural light.
