Saatchi Gallery

Start

Saatchi Gallery opened in March 1985 in a disused paint factory on Boundary Road, St John’s Wood. Its first exhibition, drawn from the collection of Charles Saatchi, showed Donald Judd, Brice Marden, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol, the first UK showing for Twombly and Marden.

Three addresses

In April 2003 the gallery moved to County Hall on the South Bank, taking 40,000 square feet of the former Greater London Council headquarters. On 9 October 2008 it opened in the Duke of York’s HQ on the King’s Road, Chelsea. Paul Davis + Partners and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris refurbished the building, giving 70,000 square feet across fifteen exhibition spaces of equal proportion.

The gallery became a registered charity in 2019.

Forty years

The Long Now: Saatchi Gallery at 40 ran from 5 November 2025 to 1 March 2026 across nine exhibition spaces on the first and second floors. Curated by Philippa Adams, senior director from 1999 to 2020, it brought together 47 artists. Richard Wilson’s 20:50, the recycled engine oil installation first shown in 1987, returned to the top floor.
