Modular dwellings that shelter and confine

Start

MóDULO De ViDA is an ongoing series of images by DOISDOIS, begun in 2026. It shows inhabited modular structures at different scales, suspended in an atmosphere with no defined landscape or context.

The buildings appear outsized and provisional. Single figures sit in their round openings, and the structures seem at once to shelter and to confine them.

DOISDOIS describes the series as part of an artistic research into the relationship between architecture and ways of life. The starting point is the large city, where living spaces multiply under a logic of efficiency, optimisation and repetition. The units get smaller while the structures that hold them get larger, and the promise of proximity, access and convenience arrives with fewer possibilities of dwelling.

In the images, the inhabitants are small and almost interchangeable. Each opening shows one particular life, and also the edge of a structure that keeps the eye from reaching anything beyond it.

The title shifts the expression modo de vida, way of life, into módulo de vida, module of life. Between what is built in order to live and the way people come to live, DOISDOIS asks how far our ways of dwelling are choices, and how far they are responses to a system that came before us.

The research draws on Ailton Krenak’s Ideias para Adiar o Fim do Mundo and its reflections on contemporary ways of life, civilisational abstraction and the plurality of forms of existence.
